I have been working through all the details for our getaway. It’s true I have been married to an amazing man for 20 years. We wanted to do something fun this year for our anniversary. I wanted to either do a big celebration and renew our vows, or I wanted to do a spectacular vacation. I felt like after 14 moves, 2 countries, 2 states and multiple cities, job changes, raising kids and work, we deserved that big celebration or that time away. That all pretty much went out the window when I saw the price tag for my back surgery that insurance won’t pay for.
Instead we are sneaking away to a quaint town just an hour away. I think we often forget that some of the best vacation spots are in our backyard. I know we forget. So we are headed to the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. We will get there by taking the scenic route and we will stay in a very old hotel on the river and we will also stay at a bed and breakfast in downtown Hood River.
My husband and I love to travel alone. We love to have just us time, with no phones, no computers and no kids with their busy schedules.
We got a great deal on the Hotel by first searching Hotwire and Priceline. In the end we just called the Hotel and they gave us the same discounted rate, plus an upgrade, plus a wine tasting.
For our second night we chose something a little more affordable and we will be staying at a Bed and Breakfast in downtown. I am excited about this because there are so many restaurants and breweries in the area and we can walk and try whatever we want. There was no haggling the price because the rooms were already almost sold out.
I have already searched the restaurant scene and I know where we will be headed. I was hoping to use a Restaurant.com coupon, but there are none in the area. Instead we will take the time to splurge a little because this is our 20 year anniversary. Now that’s a Finer Thing.
I hope you all enjoy your weekend, because I know I am going to be enjoying mine.

With the economy the way it is, it seems like everyone is cutting back and trying hard not to spend money aimlessly on things. I think this is great. This is something that many people have needed to do for years now. But with so many blogs out there filled with all types of money saving tips, which I too will share, there comes a point where you feel guilty buying something that you truly want or enjoy, but you need to know, it's ok to splurge every now and then.

Happy 20th!
We went to the same area for our 20th (although our anniversary is in March) and had a very romantic, special time.
Wishing you a wonderful getaway!
