Health Insurance Won’t Pay? Don’t Give Up Yet

For my loyal visitors that come to check what deals I find or splurges I find…thank you.  I know I have been out of it since my surgery.  I sleep most of the days, probably due to the loads of meds that I am on.

Right now I want to share with you something I have been working on.  A “Money 4 This” if you will.  If you remember me sharing about my anterior disc replacement surgery, you will also remember me sharing how I will have to pay out of pocket for some of it.  Still I am truly frustrated, because insurance needs to pay for this.  I have fought my insurance and been denied 3 times.  I have one final appeal and I stumbled upon this gal, The Insurance Warrior.

I don’t know if we will win or not, but after reading through her stuff that we paid $24.95 for, we think we might be able to put together enough of an appeal to possibly get insurance to pay for this.

For those of you that are dealing with life threatening diseases (mine is not) and insurance has not agreed to pay for the proper procedure, you need to contact Laurie Todd.

She will not be working on our case with us, but she has given us a ton of direction and has even given us some information that we will need.  Our case is not one she is super knowledgeable about, but with my 9 months of research, I am. She is now just giving us the tools to win this thing.

When she does choose to take on a case, she rarely looses.  As a matter of fact, I think she has only lost one case.  The other 50+ she has won.

I blog about this for 2 reasons.

1.  Right now it is taking my time and I haven’t had time to check on some great deals, plus I am laid up and haven’t even shopped myself, so I don’t have a lot to report.  So sorry!

2.  I want to get this information out there.  For me to get this surgery will wipe out our whole entire savings account, plus we are getting money from family.  I think insurance should pay for it, I just have been going at it all wrong and it’s time we got the word out to the world, that there is someone out there that can help you fight insurance.

$24.95 is small price to pay.  We are so far in the appeal process that it’s not looking super good and since I already had the surgery, also makes it a tough one to win, but they haven’t seen the last of me yet.  I will have to put out a lot of money if I do indeed lose, so the $24.95 was so worth it to us.

I will keep you posted on how this goes.  Until then, please pass along this info to anyone you know that is fighting with insurance.    Mine is for a Total Disc Replacement surgery, and The Insurance Warrior mostly deals with cancer treatment, but all of us need to be aware of our benefits and what’s due to us.

  1. Wow! This looks like a great resource. I wish we had had it last year when my son had to get cranial banding (the baby helmet). Those suckers are expensive and I spent HOURS fighting with them.

  2. This gal won a case where the surgery had taken place 18 months prior. It’s never too late. When you look through her stuff you will realize that you (and us too) never actually “fought” the insurance, we more begged. Very different approach.

  3. Amy (Money 4 This) isn’t exaggerating when she says that she’s frustrated with the insurance companies. I’ve heard her many woes in dealing with insurance leading up to her recent surgery. It’s sad & wrong how insurance companies treat people. Amy, I continue to pray that somehow your WHOLE surgery will get covered by insurance!!!

  4. Great post!

Last week at my dental appointment, I apologized to the accountant for how long it took me to get my insurance to pay. She said, “It is always hard to get insurance to pay, but you are the only patient who fights and we appreciate that”. That completely amazed me. Who wouldn’t fight to get the coverage they pay for? The bigger question to me is why do we have to fight so hard to get that coverage?!

  5. I agree with person that once told me we needed an insurance company reform not a whole new health reform. It’s crazy that we do have to fight, but if that’s what they want, then that’s what we will give them.
My daughter had surgery last September and I just finished paying her last bill because the insurance company couldn’t get the right information from the right people. I finally had to intervene and help them out, because they weren’t smart enough to realize that they were requesting medical information from a billing company. Seriously, this is your job and you deal with this stuff all day, every day and you couldn’t figure that out???!!!??
